My Journey: From Insurance Sales to Remote Work

I didn't believe remote work was real until my sister got her job in 2021. By April 2022, I had mine. It changed my life completely. That's why we built RemoteHuntr.co.ke together. You deserve this opportunity too.

Let me be honest with you. Back in 2018, I was selling insurance and barely getting clients. Meanwhile, my sister was constantly talking about these "remote jobs" she was searching for. I'd watch her, curious but not convinced. Remote job? What even was that? Was it gigs? Microtasking? Was it actually profitable or just some internet fantasy? I had zero tech expertise, and honestly, I like being around people—sitting alone at a computer all day didn't sound appealing at all. Plus, the internet in Nyeri was terrible! I'd see her getting frustrated over and over, applications going nowhere, rejections piling up, and I'd wonder: Is this even worth it? Is she just wasting her time? I observed from the sidelines, interested but skeptical, not really understanding what she was chasing.

Then in January 2021, she FINALLY got a remote job. I was shocked. Like, genuinely shocked. For the first time, I thought—wait, this could actually work. There might be something real here. But then she had to pack a single backpack and move to Nairobi abruptly because our internet couldn't support her work. Watching her leave brought this special kind of pressure: I NEED A REMOTE JOB. NOW. Suddenly I was serious. She started sending me links to job sites, and I began exploring the internet with fresh eyes, more informed this time. We put our heads together, and within a few weeks, I was getting interviews! She helped me understand what recruiters were actually looking for, the cultural differences I needed to navigate, and how to use all these virtual tools—Zoom, Google Meet, video interviews. It was a whole new world.

And then, FINALLY, in April 2022, after a grueling interview process with assessment after assessment—something I'd never encountered before—I GOT IT! But here's the kicker: the internet situation in Nyeri was still bad. Safaricom Fibre hadn't arrived in our neighborhood yet. Can you believe I had to hotspot my computer from my phone EVERY. SINGLE. WORKDAY? For over a year! My poor phone. I learned about dynamic and static IPs. Look at me becoming a techie! But honestly? It was all worth it. This job expanded my entire worldview. I worked with platforms I'd never heard of. I made friends from South Africa, Nigeria, Peru, Venezuela, Ghana—the list is endless! Getting paid in dollars was just epic. I learned to manage my time in ways I never imagined, working odd hours while everyone slept, getting used to being constantly 12 hours behind the Kenyan workday. That was a challenge, but I adapted.

Just like my sister had helped me, I started helping other people get remote jobs too. Passing on what I'd learned, demystifying the process, being the person we both wished we'd had when we were starting out. Then in June 2025, my sister shared her vision for RemoteHuntr with me, and I was ecstatic! Looking for a remote job is so much work, and between the two of us, we had this wealth of information just sitting there. Why not share it? Why not make this easier for everyone else?

That's why RemoteHuntr exists. We've seen firsthand that people need jobs, and this process desperately needs to be simplified. There's so much talent around us, in our country, that companies worldwide need to tap into. We've walked this road—the confusion, the frustration, the breakthroughs, the odd internet solutions, all of it. And we're here to tell you: you don't have to figure this out alone. You don't need to hotspot from your phone for a year (though you can if you have to—we believe in you!). Everything we learned, every mistake we made, every victory we celebrated—it's all here at RemoteHuntr.co.ke. Let us help you write your success story faster than we wrote ours.
